Dr. Smith grew up in Little Rock, AR where both his father and grandfather practiced medicine and surgery. His brother is also a physician in New York City, NY. In 1962, Dr. Smith married Jane Ann Critz, who also grew up in Little Rock.

Dr. Smith graduated from the University of Arkansas Medical School in 1963 in the same class as Dr. Simmons. Then he and his family moved to Florida, where he served on active duty in the Air Force for two years. He then did his residency training at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. He and Dr. Simmons have practiced together at Cornerstone Clinic for Women for 30 years. The Smiths have six grown children, five of whom live in Little Rock, AR. They are also the proud grandparents of 16 wonderful grandchildren.
